Choosing an electric cargo bike in Brussels

A cargo bike often replaces the second car: the school or nursery run, the weekly shop, work trips. Between the hills of Uccle, the cobbles of Saint-Gilles and the wide avenues of Woluwe, electric assistance and a good set-up make all the difference.

Two wheels or three?

The two-wheel cargo bike is the most common: box up front, handling close to a regular bike, ideal in town. The three-wheeler stands up on its own and is very stable when stopped, but it handles differently in corners.

Cargo bike or longtail?

A cargo bike offers the most space and a rain cover for the children. A longtail carries one or two children on the back, is easier to park and lighter to handle. If you are unsure, try both formats back to back in store.

What really matters

Capacity: number of children, box size and maximum permitted load.
Motor and battery: a motor designed for heavy loads and a battery that suits the length of your trips.
Child safety: bench with seat belts, rain cover and padded box edges.
Brakes and stand: powerful brakes and a stable stand so you can settle the children safely.
Storage: check the width of your door, cellar or garage before you choose.

What budget should you plan?

At KOMUT, our electric cargo bikes start at around €5,000 and go up to nearly €8,750 depending on brand, motor and equipment. Bike leasing and financing let you spread the cost.

Depending on the model and equipment, a front-loader usually carries two to four children in its box, with a bench and seat belts. Our advisers will show you the right set-up for your children’s ages.

No. A cargo bike whose assistance stops at 25 km/h counts as a bicycle: no licence and no registration. Theft and damage insurance is still recommended, and we offer one.

Yes, without an appointment in our three stores, Tuesday to Saturday. You can also book a slot if you prefer.
