Bike leasing in Belgium: what does it really cost net?

Reading time: 5 min · By the KOMUT Bikes team

Bike leasing through your employer promises savings of up to 40%. But how much does your net pay actually fall each month? Here is how it works, with worked examples and the conditions to meet.

In brief

  • Paid gross the monthly fee is deducted before social security and tax.
  • About half of the gross monthly fee shows up in your net pay.
  • €0.37 per km tax-free cycling allowance in 2026, if your employer pays it.

How it works: a bike paid from your gross salary

Your employer leases the bike from a leasing company for a fixed term, often 36 months. In the most common formula, you give up part of your gross salary each month, equal to the lease fee.

Because that amount is deducted before social security (13.07%) and tax, your net pay falls much less than the monthly fee. And private use of the bike is not taxed as a benefit in kind, under certain conditions.

Worked examples

Gross monthly feeNet cost, 40% rateNet cost, 45% rate
€100≈ €50≈ €45
€150≈ €75≈ €68
€200≈ €99≈ €90

Example: €150 gross a month over 36 months comes to €5,400. The net cost is about €2,685 at the 40% rate and €2,434 at the 45% rate. Indicative figures using 13.07% social security and 7% municipal tax.

Some employers also pass on the saving on their own employer contributions, making the net cost even lower. And if the company pays for the bike in full, it costs you nothing.

On top: the cycling allowance

If your employer pays it, the cycling allowance is tax-free up to €0.37 per km in 2026, capped at €3,700 a year. It can be combined with a company bike. Example: 10 km each way, 3 days a week for 45 weeks, brings in about €999 net a year.

03

The conditions

  • Actually use the bike for your commute.
  • Be taxed on flat-rate professional expenses, not actual expenses.
  • Keep accessories to 20% of the total lease cost.
  • At the end of the contract, any buy-out is at no less than 15% of the purchase price.

These rules also apply to e-bikes and speed pedelecs. Your employer and leasing partner will confirm the details of your contract.
