Why start with a balance bike?

A balance bike builds balance and confidence. Children who used one usually move to a pedal bike without stabilisers, often from age 3 or 4.

At what age?

As a guide, from 1.5 to 3.5 years. The child should sit on the saddle with both feet flat on the ground.

What comes next?

Next comes a 14 or 16-inch pedal bike, depending on the child’s height.

What really matters

Size before age: the child should reach the ground while seated; inseam matters more than age.
Weight: a light bike is easier to control and makes riding fun.
Handlebar: suitable grips and a steering limiter to prevent falls.
Safety: helmet, lights and bell for riding in town.

What budget should you plan?
