Leasing a speed pedelec: what you need to know

Reading time: 4 min · By the KOMUT Bikes team

For trips of 15 km or more, a speed pedelec rivals the car. And when leased through your employer, it enjoys the same tax treatment as a regular bike. Here is what to know before you start.

In brief

  • Up to 45 km/h : a class P moped under the highway code.
  • AM or B licence , registration, insurance and a suitable helmet.
  • Leasing possible : private use stays tax-free, as for a regular bike.

Speed pedelec rules in Belgium

  • Assistance up to 45 km/h: a speed pedelec is a class P moped.
  • At least an AM licence, included in a B licence.
  • Number plate and third-party liability insurance required.
  • A suitable helmet is required.

In town, traffic and 30 km/h zones limit the benefit of speed: a speed pedelec comes into its own on suburban and intercity trips.

02

Leasing a speed pedelec through your employer

A speed pedelec falls under the company bike scheme: private use is not taxed as a benefit in kind, provided you use it to commute and are taxed on flat-rate professional expenses.

Because a speed pedelec costs more, the monthly fee is higher too, but the gross payment advantage applies in full: only about half the monthly fee shows in your net pay. Check that your employer’s budget allows it.
